Well hello, how’s life?
Does it look like the back or front wheel on this bike?
Do you ever feel you are on a hamster wheel?
Spinning, going nowhere and doing all you can to make sure you don’t lose control. Life’s like that at times isn’t it?
What would happen if you were in control of your own wheel, how would that make you feel?
You are in charge of your own hamster wheel, you know that, don’t you?
You get to decide which direction you go, how fast, when, where and which route you take. Yes, you do.
I often use an exercise called the Wheel of Life with my life coaching clients. In most cases I use it early in our relationship, it helps us both see how they view their lives right here and now. Fancy doing it with me? There is a sample copy below.
To ‘play’ along print your copy from the website.
Why not? Perhaps you are in your car waiting for someone, or, if you are lucky, you are sitting on a beach and reading this to pass time until your good looking bartender comes round with your next cocktail 😉
No problem, I have you covered. Simply grab a pen and paper, use your phone to take notes, or screen shot the image below and electronically write on it. It’s easy.
I want you to circle the number in each segment which feel correlates to how you currently feel.
Next, join the numbers around the wheel to make your ‘circle’.
How circular is it? Would your bike ride be smooth, or does your wheel look like the consternations in the sky?
You may feel that areas of your life are out of your control and ‘there is nothing I can do’ about this/that/them. I call bullsh*t on that.
As I said earlier, YOU are in charge of your hamster wheel.
Look at your numbers, what do they tell you?
Taking one segment at a time, what will it take to move the number up by 1 or 2?
(side note: you can skip segments if you like – but why would you?)
What will it take you to have a smooth wheel/life?
What do you need to do to create a 10/10 world in each segment?
No matter where you are in life, there is always room for improvement.
Make an action plan, it can be nothing more than a 2 or 3 action points, or, perhaps it may involve some soul searching,
Here is an example from my wheel:
My Spiritual Awareness was 2. How can I get it to 4?
Does it mean I should go to church (more)? No, spiritual awareness (in my world) is being aware that I am a part of something bigger, it is how connected and aware I am with myself, my surroundings, and my life in general.
I have recently started to meditate, journal and just generally write what’s on my mind (part of the Miracle Morning project). Do I feel more connected with myself and those I am grateful for? Yes, absolutely. I feel this has taken me from a 2 to a 4.
I am systematically going through my wheel. Some areas need a minor tweak and some, quite frankly, need more attention!
Take your time.
This is a process, not a one and done approach which can be done over days, weeks, months and even years. Don’t be afraid to dig deep and tackle the things that are stopping you from living a life of 10’s.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.
